Production Pipeline
The pipeline starts with an idea and ends with a final product for presentation to the
world. Before starting a 3D animation project, the project manager must have a plan of
action that includes the scope of the project, the budget, and the team that will
complete the animation. The animation production pipeline is a little different
depending on the type of animation used. This blog article focuses on the 3D animation
production pipeline.

Storyboard
Next, the storyteller will create storyboards that illustrate important scenes in the
animation. These storyboards will include captions that describe the outline of the
story. This helps placement of camera and the timing of the animation. Further, this not
only allows the team to visualize the story but also helps make decisions on what works
and what does not. The storyboard can also be used to interest actors and producers to
become involved with the project.
Animatic
The goal of an animatic is to define the timing for a piece of moving image.
When used with a soundtrack, they're a quick and easy way to get a sense of a finished piece
of moving image.
Animatics are created by playing a series of images in order and changing the timing on each
frame. Timings changes are used to create a sense of pace.
Originally, animatics were created by filming drawings with a camera, then editing the film
to various scenes. Today you can create an animatic in Photoshop, After Effects, or
specialist animatic software like Boords.
Modeling
At this step, the animators will create 3D models from the 2D rough script reel. Modelers
typically use programs like Autodesk Maya and 3D Studio Max to create 3D characters.
These animations will be created to scale and represent a 3D model of the characters and
environments. 3D modeling creates a representation of the surfaces and objects with a
base object chosen from a cube, sphere, cylinder, or cone. Then the 3D objects are
manipulated by vertices, faces and edges to create a final character.
Texturing
A 3D Texture Artist creates stylized or natural textures and materials that are then applied
to 3D models and environments in games, films, or TV shows. They play an important role in
the VFX Pipeline.
